Reddit marketing for E-commerce: where to start

People ask Reddit what to buy more than almost anything else. They want to know which one lasts, which one is a rip-off and what they should have bought instead.

For a store, that is a lot of free research on how real customers talk about your products. It is also a place where a hard sell gets shut down fast.

What your buyers are asking

These are the kinds of questions that come up again and again. Each one is a chance to be the helpful answer.

  • Which [product type] lasts the longest?
  • Is [brand] worth the money?
  • Best [product] under [price]?
  • Where do you buy [item] without getting scammed?
  • Anyone tried [product]? Honest reviews please.
  • What is a good gift for someone who likes [hobby]?

Where to look

  • r/BuyItForLife. People who care about durability. Great if your product is built to last, tough if it is not.
  • r/ecommerce. For store owners. Useful for learning and swapping ideas, not for finding shoppers.
  • r/shopify. Store owners using Shopify. Good for platform questions and showing what you learned.
  • r/Frugal. Shoppers who care about value. They like honest talk about price and cost per use.
  • Hobby communities. The people who buy your product are usually in a community about the thing they use it for.

Rules change and every community is different, so read the sidebar and pinned posts before you write anything. Our guide on how to read subreddit rules shows what to check.

What tends to work

  • Giving a straight answer about which product suits which person, even if it is not yours.
  • Explaining why a product costs what it costs, with real details about materials or making.
  • Fixing a problem for a customer in public, calmly.

What to avoid

  • Discount codes dropped into comments.
  • Posting product photos with a link and nothing else.
  • Fake reviews or asking friends to play customers.

An example of a good answer

Here is the kind of reply that helps. The product and company in it are made up, and the point is the shape: answer first, reasons next, a short honest note about the connection last.

Question: What is the best everyday leather wallet that will not fall apart in two years?

Look at the stitching and the leather type before the brand. Full-grain leather with thick, even stitching around the edges and a bar tack at the stress points will outlast most. Check how the card slots are made, because that is usually where wallets fail first. Disclosure: I run a small leather shop, so I am biased, but I would say try any wallet in your hands first and look at those two things. If it fails them, skip it no matter who made it.

Post ideas you can use

  • A buying guide for your category that does not push your own brand.
  • What is inside a product, and why it costs what it does.
  • How you handle returns and what you learned from them.
  • Care and repair tips for the things you sell.
  • A behind the scenes post about how an item is made.

How to tell if it is working

Track sessions from Reddit to product and guide pages, and ask customers at checkout how they heard about you. A lot of Reddit buyers search your name later instead of clicking a link. Our guide to measuring Reddit marketing results has the full setup.

Common questions

Can I share my store link on Reddit?

Often not. Many communities ban store links. A useful answer without a link usually does more than a link without a useful answer.

Is it okay to reply to a thread about my own product?

Yes, if you say who you are, stay calm and add real information. Do not argue.

Can Reddit help with product research?

Very much. Reading how people describe what they want is some of the best free research you can get.
